#BlameTheFossils – May Bank Holiday 2017 – Day 2

I woke up at 5.37 French Time this morning, it took a long time but I managed to get back to sleep. Only to wake up again at 7.00 and I shuffled and shuffled until my noisy brother woke up. When he did I fistpumped as once he’s awake, he stays awake my brother woke everyone else up and not long after that we went down for breakfast; I would rate the breakfast 7/10 as the pancakes and waffles were deliberately cold and also the boiled egg machine was too difficult to cook with, on the brightside the apple juice was delicious and Female Fossil thought the orange juice was also very nice.

Once we had eaten breakfast we went back up to the room got our rucksacks packed into the car and drove for 20 minutes to Omaha Beach. When we arrived at Omaha Beach we gathered our bearings and started walking to the opposite end of the beach: we saw a monument on top of a hill right next to where we had parked and we decided to climb up the hill. Female Fossil and I split up from Male Fossil and my brother as there was a war bunker on a very steep way up the hill and Male Fossil had the pushchair with my brother in so he had to take the steady slope up.

Inside the bunker was a pool (covering the whole floor) of stinky stagnant water! Female Fossil and I climbed up to the monument then and met Male Fossil up there. The monument was to commemorate one of the American military divisions on capturing the beach.

A path led off the monument to an American cemetery which is the first place that you see in the film: Saving Private Ryan. We followed the path to the cemetery, the moment you step foot in there and see the 9000 crosses of the deaths of men you felt a cold feeling go down your spine.

We followed the path round the cemetery and went back out the way we came in. Halfway down the hill there was a set of crossroads and we turned left instead of going straight down. That brought us back down onto the beach we then walked another 5 kilometres to the end of the beach halfway across the beach the tide was so far in that we had to go off the beach and onto the higher up path!

We went the rest of the way on that higher path when we reached the wooden pier that signalled the end of the beach, we turned around and headed on the road back to the car. Further down that road we had a decision whether to do a left turn and walk for a kilometre in the countryside to get back to the beach or straight on which was still going on the road and walk along the road until you get back to the car. As Male Fossil was still pushing the pushchair and the path on the road was narrow he made an executive decision to go back to the beach. We arrived back at the car about 1 hour later. We had walked 15 kilometres that day, Male Fossil surprised us and said we were going to check out a place called Point De Hoc as it was on the way back to the hotel. We were reluctant at getting out of the car when we arrived at Point Du Hoc but it was definitely worth it, there were loads of bunkers there that I went into and also holes where guns would of went.

We went back to the car and were told that we are going to go to the most well preserved stationary guns in Europe called the Longues Battery! When we got there I was astounded by how well kept they were and also how big they were!

After we had seen all 4 we went back to the car and finally drove back to the McDonalds for dinner. This time Male Fossil and I went in there got our food and we ate in the car. Once our dinner had been eaten we went back to the hotel and as it was late we went to sleep.

The plan for tomorrow was to go and see Mont Saint Michel and see the 1000 year old Bayeux Tapestry!
